SPEAKER: Supreme Court Justice Michael Guidry
On January 1, 2025, Justice John Michael Guidry made history when he became the 117th Associate Justice of the Louisiana Supreme Court and only the fourth African American to serve as an Associate Justice on the Louisiana Supreme Court in the court’s more than 212-year history. Justice Guidry was formerly a member of the Louisiana First Circuit Court of Appeal, and on January 1, 2023, he made history again when he became the 15th Chief Judge of the Louisiana First Circuit Court of Appeal and the first African American to hold that position in the more than 144-year history of the court.
Before being elected to serve in our state’s judiciary, Justice Guidry served four years as a member of the Louisiana State Senate and served a year before that as a member of the Louisiana House of Representatives. He is also a former Assistant Parish Attorney for the City-Parish of East Baton Rouge and currently serves as an Adjunct Professor at the Southern University Law Center.
Justice Guidry is a graduate of McKinley High School and received his B.A. in Political Science from Louisiana State University and his Juris Doctorate from the Southern University Law Center. “John Michael” is an ordained deacon and former Sunday School superintendent at Fairview Baptist Church who is frequently invited to speak at local churches and assemblies. He is married to the former Carol Fowler, and they have two children, 30-year-old John Morgan and 24-year-old Kennedy Michelle.
